Kampala Snake Park  : In the Uganda safaris tour, visiting the reptile homes may not be tourists main priority. But on a Kampala city tour one should consider to have a glance at the Kampala snake park.

This wonderful home of reptiles was formed and started up by MS Nankunda about 13 years ago, as early as February 16th 2009, and this was after gaining authority from the Uganda wildlife authority to set it up to thrill while on Uganda City Tours.

The snake park is one of the most major snake reserves in Uganda which is located at Kajjansi bweya road. Kampala Snake Park is also a home of over 20 species of snakes in over 22 cages and above, some of these reptiles were brought in from Kenya and others were displaced by human population.

With support from MS Nankunda and the wildlife authorities their new homes were set up in Kajjansi using masengere “brown stones. I bet your now asking yourself why the brown stones or the masengere rocks, right. Well the brown rocks due to their ability to regulate heat and also to be able to cool themselves down was the main reason as to why they were used. Because, this is so favorable for all snakes most in all different weather   conditions.

Back to the left leg, inside these built masengere cages you can see green grass, tree branches, sand and ponds so as to give the snakes a sense of nature. As we all know we all love a place of comfort bit it human or snakes.

Well to pull your right leg some of the snakes found in this place are: African rock python, secretive tree snake, forest cobra, twig snake, boiga, bush viper, olive snake, and a leopard tortoise. Just to note most of these snakes are venomous.

MORE ABOUT THE SNAKES

While with a safari guide, the gentleman spoke about their feeding and growth basically and our tourist in the Uganda safaris were all left in shock and amusement,

Once in a month these incredible creatures shade off their old skins and grow a new and a shiny skin, these lovely creatures are removed out of their cages as they undergo that period of change and separated from the other snakes.

The shade off skin is pale and scaly and in replacement of that skin grows a beautiful shiny new skin and that makes one feel like touching it a lover of animal print items can understand what am saying right now. The skins of these snakes grow as the snakes too grow, so when time is right the snakes split the old skin at the nose and crawls out of its old skin. Imagine if also human could grow a new soft skin as they age ho! That feeling.

A meal once in two weeks

Snakes are   feed once in every two week as explained by the safari guide. Under Kampala city tour you will get to know that these reptiles are also feed in a special way just like humans need a diet they too need a great diet to grow well.

Snakes are carnivorous and different types of species of animals are feed to them according to their different species too, they are feed with different stuff such as: rats, frogs, small birds, rabbits, fish chameleon, and squirrels. This food is provided by a snake food trapper and the amount of food eaten and given depends on the size of the snake how big or small, heavy or light it is. The guide told us that snakes like tree snakes between the ages of 5 to 10 years can about six chameleons. Their digestive system is also weak and the fact that they feed on hard stuff and meaty does not improve the matter, so it’s amusing how slow their system is. Hence when over feed they can die. The more I realized this I kept on comparing them to us, so I wonder how many human beings would be dead and keep on dying during festive seasons? “They are feed once every after two weeks apart from the python that is feed once a month “said the guide. But it gives no guarantee that they won’t bit you wen even satisfied

In order to maintain security for the tourists all snakes are seen from   a hard glass excluding a python that is seen from a net and still supper hard to break through.

Well just to say snakes might not be your idea of fun, least of all snake parks being your must visit destination but my beloved reader a day visit Uganda at this snake park  in Kajjansi proved to be amazingly exciting and supper educational. Mere imagination of many snakes in the one places sends a chill go in one’s body. So when I was told that we are heading there I asked myself who would be crazy enough to set up such a collection and display center of scary and slithering creatures. But well I was left in fascination

Trip to the park, you will learn and see a lot of things about snakes hence realize how interesting these creatures are. Then you will not be surprised that people like MS Nankunda speaks co compassionately about them.
