Gorilla Families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Uganda has more than 11 Gorilla families that are already habituated. The families are inhabited in two National  parks in Uganda these including  Bwindi impenetrable National park and Mgahinga National park which has only one habituated Gorilla families and keeps moving from place to place in country of Uganda and Rwanda.

The park has 4 different regions/sectors and these include Ruhijah , Rushaga, Buhoma and Nkuringo gorilla camp.

These are the gorilla families that are inhabited in the mentioned sectors.

Mubare family (Buhoma Sector)

Mubare family was the first group to be trekked by travelers and it’s also the first group to be habituated in the 1991. The first visitors to trek the group came in the 1993. It was named Mubare a word from the hills where it lives. The word Mubare is originated from a local word which means stone.

Habinyanja Family (Buhoma Sector)

Habinyanja family was habituated in 1997 for trekking. The group first received its visitors in the 1990 and later the group spilt up then Rushegura family was formed.

Rushegura Gorilla family (Buhoma Sector)

Rushegura family was first habituated in 2000 for trekking. The first visitors who visited the family came in the year 2000 when it was habituated, and this group is found in Buhoma Gorilla area of Bwindi Impenetrable forest.

Bitukura family (Ruhija Sector)

Bitukura family is among the created families it was formed from a local word which means clean.

Mishaya family (Rushaga sector)

Mishaya family was formed after disagreement with the Nshongi Family both families still inhabit the Rushaga sectors in the south part of Bwindi forest.

Nshogi Family (Rushaga Sector)

Nshogi family was the biggest Gorilla family in Bwindi. It started with 25 members; however after sometime the family spilt up and 10 members where left to form a new Gorilla family called Mishaya.

Nkuringo Family (Nkuringo sector)

The family is among the hardest in Bwindi. It consists of 19 families  and it  is most suited for people who  are physically fit.

Kahungye Family (Nkuringo sector)

The family is found in Rushaga sector it was opened in 2011. Kahugye is derived from a local hill an area where mountain Gorillas inhabit.

Oruzongo family (Ruhija sector)

Oruzongo family, is trekked from Ruhija area of Bwindi impenetrable Forest, The family has 22 family groups of tourists.

Busingye Family (Nkuringo sector)

The family splinter family from Kahungye family .the family has over 9 members of three infants.

Bweza family (Rushaga sector)

Bweza family is located in Rushaga sector; it has 7 silverbacks who are the leaders of the family and two black backs.

This group was formed from Nshogi family which was due.

Mgahinga National park

Nyakagezi family is the only gorilla family which is habituated   in Mgahinga family National Park.

Mgahinga National Park has over 90 mountain Gorillas, the members are nine in a family.
