Lake Mburo national park is one of the smallest national parks in Uganda but rich in biodiversity. The national park is located in western Uganda covering a total area of 260 square kilometers. The park was first gazetted as a controlled hunting area in 1933, later up graded into a game reserve in 1963 and later re-gazetted by the government into a national park in 1986. Horse riding in Lake Mburo

Horse riding is one of the exceptional and unique activities that shouldn’t be missed on your safari in Lake Mburo national park. Horse riding in the park takes about 4 to 5 hours as you ride across the savannah vegetation and the activity is arranged by a private organization which is Mihingo safari lodge situated close to the park boundary. Mihingo safari lodge has been operating horse riding activities since December 2008 when they were being carried out outside the park and in November 2009 they started carrying out the activity inside the park, currently Mihingo safari lodge has 7 horses, 4 ponies that are available daily for the visitors who want to explore the park on the horse back. Most of the horses in Lake Mburo national park cannot carry more than 85kg therefore visitors who want to participate in horse riding should have a maximum weight of 100kg. Visitors are therefore weighed before the horse riding so as to ensure that the horses are not damaged by carrying people who are too heavy.

Horse riding in Lake Mburo national park is done in two sessions that is the first session which starts in the morning at 10am and the second session which starts in the afternoon at 2:00pm. Each horse riding session allows a maximum of 6 people and they will be riding with 2 trained and experienced guides who will be guiding you during horse riding. you don’t have to be experienced in order to take part in horse riding because the horses are adjusted according to your riding speed for example if you are a beginner you will be advised to walk, and in case you an advanced or experienced rider you will ride for 4 to 5 hours through the grass of Warukiri hill in the middle of the park with views of the surrounding hills, valleys, animals like buffaloes, some of the 12 lakes surrounding the park among others.

Horseback riding can be done anytime of the year though the best period is during the wet/rainy season in the months of March to May, October to November. during the wet season there is heavy rainfall in the park which supports vegetation growth therefore the savannah grassland and woodland will be green, animals in the park such as zebras, warthogs, giraffes, impala, elands among others will be grazing in the open savannah plains which gives you a clear view therefore you will ride for a short period of time. Getting to Lake Mburo national park

Lake Mburo national park is located in western Uganda and the nearest park from Kampala which can be accessed by both road and air transport means

Road transport, you can either use self-drive, public or safari company vehicle when going to Lake Mburo national park. the park has two gate that is the Sanga gate which is 37km east of Mbarara easily accessed when coming from southwestern Uganda and Nshara gate which is 20km from Lyantonde and 50km to Mbarara and this gate is easily accessed by visitors coming from Kampala by driving via Masaka-Mbarara road which takes about 4 hours’ drive.

When using public means you will board a bus from Kampala to Sanga town and then hire a private taxi or motor cycle at a cheap price to the park headquarters. Public means of transport is however not recommended because roads to the park are not well maintained.

Air transport, there are domestic companies like Aerolink which operate scheduled and chartered flights from Entebbe airport/ Kajansi airfield to Mbarara airstrip where after you will connect to the park headquarters by roads. Flights to the park depart at 10:15am from Entebbe and arrive at 11:00am at Mbarara airstrip and when returning they will depart from Mbarara airstrip at 12:45pm and arrive at Entebbe at 13:30pm.
