Lake Natron

Lake Natron is one of the most famous lakes in the circuit. This shallow soda rich lake spans over 1000km2 yet rarely reaches more than 3 meters (10 ft.) in depth. It offers a contrast to the famously known destinations like the Serengeti National park and the Ngorongoro Crater offering unforgettable experience to those who venture to its shores.

Lake Natron is highly alkaline or salt lake named after mineral “sodium carbonate” found within its waters. Natron forms in dried lake beds commonly known as washing soda that gives its unique red coloured appearance.

The People and Culture

The Maasai people inhabit the lands around Lake Natron. Living largely traditional lives, they herd cattle, build manyattas, and practice a culture intertwined with nature. Visitors can engage in cultural visits, learn about Maasai traditions, and hear local legends many of which involve Ol Doinyo Lengai and the spirits of the land.

When is the Best Time to visit?

During the Dry Season (June – October) is the perfect time to visit lake Natron Ideal for photography, walking safaris, and flamingo nesting.

During rainy season (November- May) the area gets greener, but access can be difficult due to muddy roads. Flamingos are still present but scattered.

What animals live in Lake Natron?

Despite its harsh alkaline conditions Lake Natron supports life that has uniquely adapted to its environment. Specialized algae and microorganisms thrive in the salty waters creating the reddish hues often seen at the edges of the lake where hot springs flow in and salinity is lower, alkaline tilapias can also survive. Also Lake Natron is a crucial breeding site for around 2.5million flamingos, this is one of the largest populations in East Africa.
