This 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari is an exceptional adventure that will start from Kigali and end in Kampala. The safari will take you to Democratic Republic of Congo where you will climb mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano in the Virunga conservation area that stands at an elevation of 3470meters above the sea level. From Congo you will connect to Uganda the Pearl of Africa where you will engage in breathtaking and extra ordinary activities like gorilla trekking in Bwindi impenetrable national park, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale national park, game drive and boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth national park.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1 of the 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari

Arrival and transfer to Gisenyi, upon arrival at Kigali international airport on the first day of the 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari you will be welcomed by our driver guide who will brief you about the safari and then start the journey to Gisenyi, Lake Kivu. On the way you will have en- route lunch and impressive views of the rolling hills, homesteads, beautiful scenery, smiling people, terraced farmlands among others. Upon arrival you will engage in an amazing boat cruise where you will have great views of the beautiful scenery, landscape, sunset, steep terraced hills, different bird species like malachite kingfishers, majestic crowned cranes, view fishermen who will be fishing in dugout canoes among others. After the boat cruise you will transfer to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Hiking Nyiragongo Volcano

Hiking Nyiragongo volcano, after an early breakfast on the second day of the 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari, you will cross to Democratic Republic of Congo via Goma Grande Barrier border and then connect to the trail head at Kibat patrol post for a briefing about the safety, guidelines, precautions, expectations, stopping points and what to carry during hiking. After the briefing you will be grouped and then start hiking Nyiragongo volcano which takes about 4-6 hours to reach the summit depending on your hiking speed. During hiking you will pass through high altitude areas, lava rocks, slippery stones among others. You will have stopovers and enjoy great views of the beautiful scenery, landscape, bird species, mammals, plant species among others. When you reach on top of the volcano you will have spectacular views of the boiling lava lake, the cooks will help you to prepare hot coffee and dinner. You will spend an overnight in a cabin which is comprised of 2 single beds, mattresses and a pillow as you smell the boiling and bubbling lava.

Day 3: Descend from Nyiragongo Volcano and departure to Bwindi forest

Descend from Nyiragongo Volcano, after breakfast on the third day of the 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari you will start descending from the peak of the volcano to the starting point at Kibat patrol post which takes about 3 hours to reach. You will have great views of Virunga national park, Rwenzori Mountains, Lake Kivu, other volcanic mountains, bird species among others as you descend. Upon arrival at the starting point you will meet up with your driver guide and transfer to Bwindi impenetrable national park. You will have en-route lunch on the way, views of the Kigezi hills and upon arrival in the park you will check into the lodge, have dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi impenetrable national park

Gorilla trekking, after an early breakfast on the fourth day of the 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari, you will carry packed lunch and meet up with your driver guide to transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking is the most popular activity carried out in Bwindi impenetrable national park and it’s done in groups of 8 people where each group is allocated a gorilla family to trek and a park guide who is well conversant with trails in the jungle. Trekking of the mountain gorillas takes 30 minutes to 7 hours depending on where they are located because they like to move from one place to another in search of food.

During gorilla trekking you will be able to view other wildlife species such as red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, l’hoest monkeys, bird species such as handsome francolin, rwenzori batis, strange weaver, regal sunbird, cinnamon chested bee-eater, blue headed sunbird, short tailed warbler, animals like elephants, buffaloes, warthogs antelopes, tree and plant species among others. Once the gorillas are found you will be allowed to spend one hour with them in their natural environment which gives you an opportunity to watch them feed, play, breastfeed, learn more about their habits, behaviors, take photos and record the moments to show people back home.  After the one hour with the gentle giants you will trek back to the park headquarters where you will be awarded a certificate for participating in gorilla trekking and meet up with your driver guide to transfer back to the lodge for an evening relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park

After breakfast on the fifty day of the 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari, you will check out of the lodge and meet up with your driver guide to transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park. You will pass via Ishasha sector which is famously known for harboring the tree climbing lions that will be viewed lying up in the acacia, fig tree branches during the game drive. The lions in Ishasha sector are believed to climb trees due to several factors such as to have a clear view of their prey, to escape ground heat, to run away from biting insects like tsetse flies among others. During the game drive you will view other animals like elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, hippos, bird species among others and later go for lunch. After lunch you will proceed with the journey to Queen Elizabeth national park where you will check into the lodge for dinner and overnight upon arrival.

Day 6: Game drive/ lion tracking and boat cruise

Morning game drive/ lion tracking experience, after an early breakfast on the sixth day of the 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari, you will meet up with your guide and go for a morning game drive or lion tracking experience which starts at around 7: 00am in Kasenyi plains. During the game drive you will be able to view different wildlife species such as elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, giant forest hogs, waterbucks, bushbucks, warthogs, bird species like grey crowned cranes, yellow throated long crow, red throat spur fowl, African white backed vulture, African wattled plover, black bellied bustard, black headed gonolek, have great views of the sunrise, take beautiful pictures of the landscape, scenery among others. After the amazing game drive you will drive to Lake Katwe Crater where you will have views of the migratory birds, animals liking the salt and the local people who will be extracting rock salt from the lake. You will be able to interact with the local people to know how they earn a living through extracting rock salt and selling it to traders in Uganda and other destinations. From Lake Katwe you will drive back to the lodge for lunch.

Boat cruise, after lunch you will drive to the landing site near Mweya safari lodge for an incredible boat cruise on Kazinga channel, a water body that connects Lake George and Lake Edward. The scheduled boat cruise starts at around 2:00pm and takes about 2 to 3 hours ride and  during the boat ride you will be able to cruise meters away from large concentrations of hippos and crocodiles in water, elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, warthogs, Uganda kobs among others on the shores of the lake, water birds such as saddle bill stork, long tailed cormorant, African shoebill, yellow billed stork, pink backed pelican, black crake, cormorants, kingfisher, fish eagle, view the fishermen preparing their fishing gears for night fishing among others. After the boat cruise you will drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Transfer to Kibale national park and Bigodi swamp walk

After breakfast on the seventh day of the 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari, you will check out of the lodge and your driver guide will pick you up to transfer to Kibale national park. The journey takes about 3 hours drive and on the way you will have spectacular views of the Rwenzori Mountains, tea plantations crater lakes, beautiful scenery, baboons in the road among others. Upon arrival in the park you will check into the lodge and have lunch.

Bigodi swamp walk, after lunch you will go for an exciting nature walk in Bigodi swamp a community sanctuary that has improved the lives of people in Bigodi. During the swamp walk you will pass via boardwalks  where you will be able to have views of different bird species such as the great blue turaco, papyrus gonolek, blue breasted kingfisher, white spotted flufftail, western Nictor, primates like the black and white colobus monkey, blue monkeys, red tailed monkey, animals like antelopes, butterflies, tree and plant species among others. After the swamp walk you will walk around the community where you will interact with the local people which gives you an opportunity to learn about their way of living, culture, tradition, enjoy entertainment through music, dance and drama. After the nature walk you will meet up with your driver guide and head back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Chimpanzee trekking and departure to Kampala

Chimpanzee trekking, after an early breakfast on the last day of the 8 days Uganda wildlife and Nyiragongo hiking safari, your driver guide will pick you from the lodge to transfer to Kanyachu Visitors center for a briefing about the rules and regulations of chimpanzee trekking. Kibale national park is the only destination in Uganda with the highest number of chimpanzees and chimpanzee trekking is done in groups of 6 individuals where each group will be allocated a chimpanzee family to trek and a park guide who will be sharing information about the chimpanzees and also conversant with trails in the forest. Chimpanzee trekking takes about 30 minutes to 4 hours or even longer depending on where the chimpanzees are located because they like to move deep into the forest in search of food.

During trekking you will have great views of others primates like l’hoest monkeys, red tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, olive baboons, grey cheeked mangabey, bird species like African pitta, crowned eagle, black capped apalis, purple breasted sunbird, collared apalis, animals like buffaloes, antelopes, elephants, plant and tree species among others. Once the chimpanzees are found you will be allowed to spend one hour with them in their natural habitat which gives you an opportunity to take photos, record videos, learn about their lifestyle, habits, behaviors, watch them play, feed, breastfeed, hunt, rest, prepare their sleeping areas among others. After the one hour encounter with the chimpanzees you will trek back to the park headquarters where you will meet your driver guide and transfer to the lodge for lunch.

Departure to Kampala, after lunch you will check out of the lodge and meet up with your driver guide to start the journey to Kampala. On the way you will have a stopover at the Equator to take photos, buy souvenirs among others. From the Equator you will continue the journey to Kampala where you will reach early evening and your driver guide will drop you off at any place of convenience or drop off at Entebbe international airport for your next flight.
