Where to see Lions in Uganda : Lions in Uganda have been in the News lately for sad reasons, in just less than a year the country has lost about 6 lions in various situations. This has left the wildlife lovers disappointed and for the loss of these many lions in a short span. Of course wildlife authorities are doing everything possible to see to it that the lions stop dying at such high rates especially those happening because of unfortunate events to thrill while on Uganda Safaris.

Well as the authorities figure out how to keep the kings of the jungle alive and how to help them stay alive for a long while, we want to share with you some places you can see lions in Uganda.

  1. Queen Elizabeth National Park

Because of the tree climbing lions Queen Elizabeth National Park is the most popular Lion Habitat in the pearl of Africa. The park is said to have over 50 lions living in its savannah vegetation. Of the total number of lions in the park a good percentage of them are tree climbing lions that live in the Ishasha sector of the park. These lions have the unique ability of climbing trees, which is not a common treat for lions. Also these tree climbing lions are more elusive than the non-tree climbers, so to catch a glimpse of them you have to track them in an experience called the lion tracking experience.

Apart from the lion tracking experience, you can also see lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park on a game drive, especially the evening or early morning game drives.

Ishasha Sector

QENP is located in western Uganda about 3 to 4 hours from Kampala

  1. Kidepo Valley National Park

Of recent Kidepo Valley National Park has been said to have the highest number of lions compared to other parks. This semi-arid park sometimes called the Maasai mara of Uganda; have over 70 lions living in its flora together with other animals.  The lions are best seen on game drives in the evening, night and early morning. Because this park also has cheetahs, it’s always interesting to witness the lions the supposedly king of the jungle hiding from the cheetah. Cheetah and Hyenas are the biggest wildlife predator for lions. Kidepo is located in Northern Uganda about 10 to 11 hours from Kampala.

  1. Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is another park that is home to the might lions the park lion Queen Elizabeth has over 50 lions that make their home in the park’s landscape and vegetation. The lions in this park are best seen in the wee hours and in the evening as they go about their lifestyle. The lions here a seen during game drives that take you through the park to witness the different animals in the park. MFNP is located is north west Uganda about 4 to 5 hours from Kampala city.

Though these are the main three lion parks in Uganda, you can be lucky to spot lions in other parks and game reserves. Though they may be one or two or just one pride, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Apart from lions, the parks above are also homes to other mammal species including the other big five that are elephants, buffaloes and leopards, plus other animals that include but not limited to giraffes, zebras, topis, warthogs, waterbucks, antelopes, kobs, impalas, hippos and many more animals.

The parks also have a number bird species like African eagle, shoe bill stork and many others.
