How to Get to Murchison Falls National Park: Murchison falls park is the largest and one of the oldest national parks located in the north western part of Uganda. The national park was gazetted in 1952 and is bisected into two sectors the northern and southern sector. Murchison falls national park is comprised of different vegetation types including savannah grassland, woodland and riverine forest which act as habitat for more than 76 mammal species including the big four of the big five ( elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards), other animals like Uganda kobs, giraffes, hippos, Jacksons hartebeest, oribi, bushbucks, waterbucks, warthogs, hyenas, crocodiles, primates like chimpanzees, red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, baboons among others which are found in Kaniyo Pabidi forest. The park is also one of the top birding destinations in Uganda due to the fact that it harbors more than 450 recorded bird species including migratory species and water birds such as swamp flycatcher, the elusive shoebill stork, red throated bee-eater, northern red bishop, papyrus gonolek, Abyssinian ground hornbill, goliath heron, pied kingfisher, grey crowned crane, silver bird, bar breasted fire finch among others.

Murchison falls national park is located in northwestern Uganda and can either be accessed by air transport means or by road transport by use of private means or public means by bus.

Road transport means to Murchison falls

When using road transport means to Murchison falls, visitors can either use private means by a registered tour company like Achieve Global Safaris where our representative will pick you from Entebbe international airport or Kampala to the park headquarters which takes about 5 to 6 hours drive. Murchison falls National Park can be accessed by different gates in the northern and southern sectors including 

Northern gates

Tangi gate, Tangi gate is located 110 kilometers from Kara Bridge and it’s easily accessed from through Paara by using a ferry to cross River Nile.

Chobe gate, Chobe gate is adjacent to Pakwach town at a distance of 2 km and it can be accessed from Paraa and Karuma falls.

Wankar gate, Wankar gate is located in the northern sector near Purogo at a distance of 10km off the main road.

Mubako gate, Mubako gate is accessed by visitors who use Kampala-Pakwach route by crossing River Nile using karuma falls bridge to the park. 

Southern gates 

Bugungu gate, this gate can be accessed from Masindi and the route takes about 135km passing through Budongo forest which is known for harboring mahogany trees and different primates such as chimpanzees.

Kichumbanyobo gate, this gate can be accessed from Masindi town which takes about 85km passing through Kaniyo Pabidi forest which harbors a number of wildlife species.

Visitors who use road transport means to Murchison falls will have great views of beautiful scenery, traditional homesteads, local people, roadside markets, views of the rift valley, Lake Albert, among others on the way. 

Air transport means to Murchison falls national park

There are several aircrafts like Aerolink Uganda, Eagle airlines among others which offer scheduled and charter flights for visitors who want to use air transport means. Murchison falls has several airfield that are located near the park such as Chobe airstrip, Pakuba airfield in the northern part of the park and Bugungu airstrip in the southern sector. The chartered and scheduled flights depart from Entebbe airport or Kajjansi airfield to one of the airfields in the park. Upon arrival at one of the airstrips you will be picked by your driver-guide and transfer to the park headquarters or the lodge, flights to the park can be booked by your tour operator. Air transport is quick and less tiresome for visitors who are not used to travel long distances.
